If the tabs in document area are partialy visible, they haven't got the close
button.

I noticed this also on solaris/sparc

Yes, it's as designed, because when only part of the tab is visible, the space
for clicking on it and not closing it would be too small, that's why close
button is omitted in such case. Moreover, user would very rarely want to close
some tab if she doesn't see the title of the tab.
