Description Lukas Hasik 2004-11-30 14:45:46 UTC
change icons, background, splashscreen etc. to the
x-mas mood.

Why ?
It'll excite community, everybody likes 'special'
editions. And everybody likes X-mas.

We don't have to change everything, it's enought
to change something... less is more sometime.

It'll definitelly interest lot of people, they'll
want to see X-mas NetBeans...
Comment 1 Martin Brehovsky 2004-11-30 15:36:29 UTC
We should change at least the splashscreen. I think users will like it
:-).
Comment 2 tv 2004-11-30 15:40:29 UTC
This is a pretty cool ideal. I like this a lot! What kind of work
would have to go into this and would we have enough time to do such a
thing before the holidays?

I would love to see this happen if we can put together the resources...
Comment 3 Martin Ryzl 2004-11-30 15:56:03 UTC
If I correctly understand the proposal, it should be a regular q-build
(perhaps marked as EA2?) with some xmas graphics and some
announcements to attract people attention.
Comment 4 Roman Strobl 2004-11-30 16:18:35 UTC
Well what I think some people would really appreciate would be a small
Christmas game which would appear during the "Scanning classpath"
dialog. Especially those who have really *large* projects. Maybe some
shooting with snow balls (perhaps too demanding on CPU?) or Christmas
version of Memory Match (Pexeso). What do you think?
Comment 5 Jan Chalupa 2004-11-30 16:44:50 UTC
Re "everybody likes X-mas": IMO, "everybody" is far from true. There
are many cultures that don't celebrate Christmas at all.

No objections to a special NB "Winter edition", but please: no Santa,
Jezisek, Christmas trees, jolkas, gifts, etc.
Comment 6 Marian Mirilovic 2004-11-30 16:57:26 UTC
Lukas,
good idea .... I think the best one for last 4 years ;)

Honza is right, but for English release we can expect users from
"X-mas compatible" culture (more or less).
Comment 7 Lukas Hasik 2004-11-30 17:20:50 UTC
IMHO - any special edition will attract new users, winter or x-mas. I
agree that winter is more generic.

There isn't much time to do this so I think that we should change at
least something in ui...

And we should start with most visible parts of ide to awe everybody :)
-installer - background
-splashscreen
-welcome screen - snowflakes falling from top ?
-desktop icon
-toolbar icons - with snow hat ?
-mouse cursor, progress dialog, etc. - it seems unrealistic/undoable
to me, just note
Comment 8 _ tboudreau 2004-11-30 21:02:29 UTC
Bear in mind that the winter edition should go out on July 21 in the southern hemisphere.

Hmm, we could do "xmas edition"; just throw in "Ramadan edition", "Chanukkah edition"
(given the timing, we would need an "Are you Jewish?" checkbox on the download page
and substitute a different branding bundle...). We could throw in L. Ron Hubbard's
birthday for the Scientologist developer community...

Actually, I think we're enough past the age of hyper-political-correctness (that is, that
style of political correctness has sufficiently discredited itself) that a christmas edition is a
perfectly reasonable thing to do - you just position it in the form "A lot of our developers
celebrate christmas, and wanted to do something special, so this week's download is a
little different. If this bothers you, click here for the regular build." Celebrating something
!= denigrating something else, which was the core of the foolishness that underlay
political correctness.
Comment 9 Martin Brehovsky 2004-12-01 08:37:52 UTC
I completely agree with Tim.

cc'ing Ruda and going attach more sources - welcome page and splash screen
i'll add changed 'scanning classpath' progress bar tommorow (i hope)

I'll change nbbuild/build.xml before wednesday q-build to include all
the changed stuff in the q-build and if everything goes fine (= no
problems because of x-mas changes) it'll be merged/commited into
q-build branch

all changes will be let known here before they are integrated into
q-build branch

I forgot to note -
Winter is too long to have a winter edition. This special edition will
be released before X-mas and it'll be called X-mas edition. I agree
with Tim: "Celebrating something
!= denigrating something else" = why dont' we have a ramadan, new
year, chanuka, Songkran ? ... there is place for everybody - go and
do it !
Comment 18 Lukas Hasik 2004-12-22 10:11:12 UTC
done.

NB4.1 has special X-mas edition and is downloadable as first nb4.1
qbuild.

Changes and actions in X-mas edition:
-new splashscreen, welcome
screen, toolbar icons
-snowing over welcome screen - all sources in
contrib/xmas2004

-announced on nbusers and nbdev
-news on
netbeans.org

I'm looking forward for next special edition ;)
thanks to
anybody who helped.
