I was getting it pretty reliably until selected empty userdir.

caused by issue 40766 or Nejedly's attempt to fix it.  The fix has
been rolled back

Strange my sources are up-to-date. Anyway it really seems to be issue
40766 duplicate.

I've reverted my "fix" for 40776 a while ago, because it was causing
the problem you've seen now.
