Description bht 2016-12-01 08:18:36 UTC
Menu|Tools|Options|General|Test Connection

As we know there is no upper limit to stupidity. However computers should not be fooled by this.

A common firewall setting in government environments is to randomly show every web user a page reminding them of code of conduct, showing threats of traffic being logged etc. with a form button to confirm which will then re-open the firewall for them.

Unless this form is replied to, it is shown repeatedly, and / or other traffic is blocked. The rules for all of this are not entirely transparent and obvious, so we should expect all sorts of nonsense.

For example, this HTTP response is not associated with a meaningful HTTP response code such as access denied etc.. That would be way too smart.

The IDE response to this is inconsistent. If I try to use the issue reporter in such a scenario, the issue reporter correctly diagnoses a broken network connection, while at the same time, the Menu|Tools|Options|General|Test Connection button shows a green check mark. This is a bug.

What I am trying to say is that while there is no upper limit to human stupidity, computers should still respond correctly and remind the user in most contrasting terms, more aligned with what matters, in this case that there is no way this connection can ever work in such a scenario.

I just had a more common case where the credentials stored in NetBeans for firewall authentication were expired. Access to the update center was broken as one would expect, while the "Test Connection" button got a positive green check mark response.

When we try and load netbeans we are having issues with it crashing shortly after first running. When you run the program as a standard user not admin the popup box which normally appears doesn't popup, causing the software to crash.
