Cannot reproduce in

Product Version: NetBeans IDE Dev (Build 20140902-1e0bb22f8870)
Java: 1.8.0_11; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 25.11-b03
Runtime: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 1.8.0_11-b12
System: Windows 7 version 6.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb)

Besides your screenshot looks wrong. The project color shouldn't fill the whole item background, it should be just a short bar on the left hand side.
Do you have any thirdparty plugins installed?

Although it might work for you, I have the problem on two different PCs, both using Windows (7 and 8), as you can see on the screenshot. And if the color bar should look different, this might be an additional problem. On a colleagues PC it looks the same like on mine. No third party plugins installed.

I think I got it - you selected to have Tab placement - right, is that correct?
The Sort opened documents list by project applies to drop down which shows after clicking 'down arrow' button at the top right corner of editor area.

right

I know, this list is sorted, but that#s not the point.

Tools -> Options -> Appearance -> Document Tabs

This is about document tabs. Any user expects the tabs to be sorted by project when he checks "sort by project", even thoght the text says "document list". This list is hidden until I open it. And if I define "Document tabs"W, i expect the visible list (that are my tabs) to be sorted.
And they are not sorted by project --> bug.

If you don't agree this mis-behabiour being a bug, the don't set it to resolved. Change it from bug to enhanement. Thanks.
Comment 8 Stanislav Aubrecht 2014-09-12 10:22:52 UTC
Documents list is part of the documents tabs.
To have tabs in editor area sorted by project you need to choose 'One row per project' option.

Agree with @muellermi, very confusing description and behavior. All other options are about tabs, while sorting is about list? And whats the point of sorting list only, why not to sort tabs, moreover this is much more useful.
