The performance data show that ViewUpdates is recomputing the layout during the reformat (?). 

In report 699944 [7.4], the AWT TextLayout initialization is incredibly slow.

This old bug may not be relevant anymore. If you can still reproduce it in 8.2 development builds please reopen this issue.
