If you switch a file to another branch, it is not marked or visible on first sight, that this file isnt the branch you work on. So when you forget that you have switched the branch, there can be strange behaviours, and you dont know why. For this case it would help, if the file will be marked somehow, so you can see, that that file isnt right in that branch.

Maybe this enhancement is not only for CVS version control system but also for others.

Can you do this for SVN too (trunk vs. branches)?

It's already there (at least for subversion), just:
1) enable View -> Show Versioning Labels
2) Tools -> Options -> Misc -> Versioning -> Subversion: and edit Subversion Labels: [{status} {folder}] - {folder} will be replaced with the branch name
