If I set an alternate empty %TMP% directory (using the TMP environment variable) before starting NetBeans 7.0 in a Windows box things *seem* to speed-up a lot: the ide starts up faster and seems to be more responsive. I think it could be worthwhile to investigate if NetBeans starts up faster with an empty TMP directory on Windows, and if a custom TMP directory for all NetBeans stuff is worthwhile. Maybe NetBeans could create an empty TMP subdirectory at startup and delete it completely on exit. Currently I have lots of directories and files in %TMP% in Windows (because of antivirus, microsoft indexer and other different assorted & mandatory useless stuff).
