Description AlyonaStashkova 2011-02-17 22:03:05 UTC
Though English is specified in the IDE Language drop-down list at http://bits.netbeans.org/download/trunk/nightly/latest/, the multi-language file is downloaded and nowhere during the installation the language can be specified during the installation.
The installer automatically chooses the language that matches the locale during the installation.

This always happened to me. That drop-down list does nothing. We have to change the netbeans.conf file to change the language. Annoying...
Comment 2 ceklock 2012-11-06 21:31:34 UTC
It would be great if it was possible to select the desired language at download time, but currently it is not.

The combo box at the download page should at least be removed if it is not functional.

I agree - we provide ML builds by default, so the language button is misleading.
Comment 4 Jiri Rechtacek 2012-11-07 09:00:30 UTC
Okay, I'm going to remove the button. Honzo, please watch this issue and if needed then polish up the web page once the IDE Languages button will be removed. Thanks

Hi,
please do not remove it! This selector sets some parameters which are then tracked by the statistics engine Omniture and give us stats on the language distribution of the downloads. If you remove it we would loose this drilldown.

Honza, but we do not have any special XYZ language distribution. We have just ML downloads.

Jirka, could we get this information (locale) user uses inside the IDE and sent it as a parameter to UC ? ... actually localized versions use localized UCs, are they ? if so, I think this is the way to count how many people use each locale.

That's right but it's a different statistics of active users than statistics of downloads.
Based on discussion held on last NBI team meeting I'm going resolve it as wontfix. If you don't agree let's discuss it there in the next week.

Can't you get the locale by IP? When I visit http://netbeans.org/downloads/ the page is in brazilian portuguese because I am in Brazil. I think that is why portuguese is selected in the combo box for me.

Too bad you won't fix this :-/

Why do you want to track statistics with a flawed list? Even if I select English in the drop-down list, the language of the IDE will be Portuguese here. I gived up the language selection on the page (because I know it does nothing) but I always change netbeans.conf to use English.

"It's not a bug, it's a feature!" - flawed feature imo. It is a shame you track statistics using a flawed drop-down list and continue insisting on that.
