Description gliesian 2011-01-16 22:32:15 UTC
When running this command:

Profile->Advanced Commands->Run Profiler Calibration

... a window will eventually open with this warning:

"Warning: If your computer uses dynamic CPU frequency switching, please disable it and rerun calibration as changing the CPU frequency during profiling would produce inaccurate results."

This is indeed a value-added warning, but it leaves the users baffled as to where to start figuring out if their computer (e.g. laptop) is using the feature (that needs to be disabled).

I recommend the following... either (1) add additional information in NetBeans help system and bind to it with a help button, or (2) add a web page in NetBeans online documentation and bind to it with a hyperlink. Whichever solution is implemented, the button or hyperlink would be relative to the Information dialog as shown in the attached image. The help should from a very high level let the user know where to start in checking if there systems use dynamic CPU frequency switching, and if so get a general idea of how to turn it off.

Note: providing this documentation is a little out-of-scope of what NetBeans provides... but if the dynamic CPU frequency switching isn't disabled, it greatly affects the usability of the profiler... that's why it's important that any assistance to the user in learning how to turn the feature off would be of much importance.

Ken, could you take a look at this? Whether it is possible to add help for all possible combinations of HW/OS describing how to disable dynamic CPU frequency switching?

I can take a look at it, but I think the best place for this type of information would be an FAQ. The dialog can then link directly to the FAQ page. Is there a good place to learn more about this?

So, is it added somewhere? I have no clue how to do it and the internet is of no help. Can I neglect is as less important, or can it influence the profiling too much?
