This was brought up while Cadence visits.
I know some former Sun Workshop users liked this feature and we have discussed this many times in the past. The conclusion has always been: it would be wrong to implement something like this is a few selected dialogs, for instance those in CND/projects. During normal usage, many operations are performed using dialogs from other modules like NB projects or editor. Opening a project or a file, for instance. We can't change this in CND. If we want a feature like this, it needs to be a universal change throughout NetBeans. Anything else would give a bad experience with some dialogs (those not controlled by CND) not having this feature. Perhaps this should even be implemented at the Swing level. Will close as Will Not Fix. If you insist of re-opening, please don't just pick projects, file it against NetBeans so it can be implemented across the board. And it looks more like an enhancement like a defect to me.
Thomas, do you know NB chooser which doesn't support "~"? Open File Open Project Save As they all support "~"
Igor, please, have a look. Cadence still has issues with ~ in some of our dialogs
All dialogs in NetBeans 7.0.1 do support ~.
