Description Irina Filippova 2009-04-14 07:49:09 UTC
More information on how to get the unbundled runtimes for the ZIP download needs to be added to wiki pages.

This information includes:
- where to get the runtimes
- how to hook them into the IDE
- what other installation options on top of existing installations are possible
Comment 1 Irina Filippova 2009-10-07 09:38:32 UTC
Brad, reassigning the issue to you as the owner for installer documentation.
Comment 2 Bradley Schmidt 2009-10-07 15:42:15 UTC
Instructions for installing the platform independent zip bundle are already in the Install Instructions -
http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/67/install.html#install_zip

and there is an FAQ with essentially the same information -
http://wiki.netbeans.org/FaqZipDistro

Is there is a specific runtime that needs to be added? If so, that needs to be specified (eg: GlassFish) as there are
too many options to include. Also note that FAQ's are primarily owned by QE unless that has changed since past releases.

I've been offline awhile, so wasn't able to follow this properly, and I wasn't on the notify list even so, but thought I was.

As shown in https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=142818 those pages have insufficient information about the zip distros, and the modules files aren't referenced at all. There aren't a lot of options needed; it's just which IDE settings or environment strings need to be changed manually so the IDE can find the packages in a place other than the defaults the bundled installs put them. Once it knows where they are, the plug-ins should be able to generate the defaults for other communication/startup settings appropriate to the version of GlassFish, Tomcat, JME, etc., it discovers there. If they can't, which Option pages the plug-ins provide the IDE the User needs to verify have sensible values according to that packages documentation should be listed.

The idea is put on that page which settings need to be verified are appropriate when you have side by side installs of runtime versions, be it for version testing or other software requires a prior version, so that the plug-in can be switched back and forth as the frontend for them without crashing the IDE. This would also serve as what do you need for the IDE to recognize that runtime to begin with when you don't have the installer setting it for you.

Another way to look at it, when different IDE versions, e.g. 6.9 and 6.9.1, get bundled with the same runtime versions of glassfish or tomcat, what needs to be set in the zip download of 6.9.1 so it could use the runtimes installed by a 6.9 bundle.

Alyona is now supporting Installation instructions. Reassigning.

I suppose, it will suffice to mention in the Platform Independent Package section of the Installation Instructions (http://netbeans.org/community/releases/69/install.html#install_zip) that the Add Server Instance Wizard helps to register an instance of the GlassFish/Apache Tomcat web server with the IDE that has been extracted from the archive that contains a platform-independent distribution and installed.
The Add Server Instance Wizard displays after choosing Tools > Servers from the main menu of the IDE.

Info on registering Tomcat and GlassFish servers with the IDE installed from a zip is added as a Note to the Platform-Independent Package section of the Installation Instructions (http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/70/install.html)
