Sometimes it would be useful to enable displaying whitespaces characters as tabs and newlines in the editor.

I prefer UltraEdit's look-and-feel to MSWord. UE shows ">>" (ascii 187) instead of TABs and vertically centered "." (ascii 183) instead of spaces. I vote for this feature because I am coming from UE and I liked it very much. 

To extend this feature request, i wish to toggle quite often between ShowWhiteSpaces and HideWhiteSpaces mode. Therefore I would like to get a hotkey for this switch.

Sorry, I can see just now that this issue is a duplication. I am going to that issue.
