It seem that there are already more than 6 copies of this useful support. Could this be turned into an API to reduce
copying?

Long filed but no progress at all. I don't think FCS as it stands is all that good; it is not particularly optimized,
and I'm not sure how reliable it is. But something similar is desperately needed in the Filesystems API. Ideally it
would use native file events to avoid polling.
