I recently logged an issue (#135710) that I thought was a bug, but turned out not to be.
From that I have a couple of suggestions:

1. With Basic Desktop Application, code inserted by way of the existing controls is placed in guarded blocks, such 
that if one or more of those controls are removed by the user, the underlying code is also removed.

2. Have a separate Basic Empty Application with no controls.

Closing old report, the Swing Application Framework is not supported for some time already.
