It should be possible to associate NetBeans with specific file extensions/mime types so that invoking such files in OS-specific way would open them in the 
NetBeans IDE.

Most other IDEs provide such functionality and many users are expecting it. I think it could be also very useful for the NetBeans Platform.

This issue was filed as a part of an effort to improve the user experience when editing files that do not belong to any project, see issue 135222
