currently the installer blocks the whole gui. it would be nice if it would do its job in the background.

are you sure that you are talking about NetBeans IDE installer (the eniry that installs the whole NetBeans IDE) and not 
about Plugin Manager and that is updating plugins with "NetBeans IDE installer" in title?

Afaik NetBeans IDE installer can`t block any UI since it is the independent process and you can just minimize it`s 
windows.
As for Plugin Manager, it really blocked the UI for a long time. But if this issue is for Plugin Manager indeed then 
the good news is that they have recently (in 6.1M1) implemented that feature.
