After openning a Open Project dialog, mouse cursor turns to hour glass and the only thing left to do it to close the

according to your description, it's hard to track the problem down. Can you provide more info like, jdk build, Ide build
and so on?
Are there any exact steps how to reproduce it? Do you get the same result when ide is started with clear user dir?
Please enclose thread dump as well when this case occurs again.

This is a very similar behavior with Opening a project window which I corrected a little while 
back by removing zip files from Windows desktop. Currently I don't have any zip files on the 
desktop though...

This is actually a performance issue, since after a long while, the File Chooser dialog becomes active again.
