It would be nice to be able to access files via FTP or SCP or even webDav in the editor. This would make working with single files on a remote server much easier. Previous versions of Netbeans apparently had remote file mounting abilities, would it be possible to incorporate that code/technology into the newer versions of Netbeans?

I think you can do that by Favorites window (Window|Favorites)...

You can add any folder/file visible on your filesystem (including network
resources) in Favorites window. Just invoke popup menu on empty area, select Add
to Favorites. In File Chooser you can select folder/file and add it to
Favorites. But there is no way how to connect to FTP, SCP, CVS from Favorites.
