Description holgerst 2004-02-20 21:27:40 UTC
The windows installer creates in the
windows "Start" menu a folder "Netbeans IDE" in
which it creates another subfolder "Netbeans IDE
3.x" which contains the actual icons to start
the application.

Why do we need both folders?

Can we just move the actual application start
icons up one level to the main "Netbeans IDE"
folder and get rid of the subfolder "Netbeans
IDE 3.x"?

And perhaps to avoid clashes - in the seldom
case - someone has installed several versions of
the IDE then call this main folder "Netbeans
3.x"?

Just some additional comments about this issue in comparison with
other windows application:

Well, when I look at my start menu I see what you mean:
For example, the company folder "Adobe" is on the top level.
BUT, directly below this top level you have the application icons
and NOT again another subfolder.

Ok, there are SOME other companies that do introduce another
subfolder level for their actual application. BUT, in that case
usually a lot of icons are created for that one particular
application.

In the case of Netbeans only three icons are created: The
actual "Netbeans IDE 3.x" icon, the "Netbeans Web" icon and
the "Uninstall Netbeans" icon. This is not much!

So even if you push the application icons up one level and there are
two different Netbeans version installed, the result would be five
icons: "Netbeans IDE 3.x", "Netbeans IDE 3.y", "Netbeans Web",
"Uninstall "Netbeans 3.x", "Uninstall Netbeans 3.y". And this is till
manageable amount of icons for one level, isn't it? (Ok, right now
thee is only "Uninstall Netbeans IDE" and this needed to be changed
to "Uninstall Netbeans 3.x", but this is a piece of cake to do) That
should be quite easily doable right?

In the proposal from above there would be one top level "Netbeans
IDE" folder. As stated, this would lead to the possible situation of
having icons from several icons in one directory. If you had a
folder "Netbeans IDE 3.x" at the top level then there would be no
icon clashes either!

But the actual question is: Who besides Netbeans developers has (or
needs) more than one Netbeans version installed in parallel? In my
company nobody does. So the problems usually will not arise.

I do have NetBeans 3.5.1 and NetBeans 3.6
installed in my machine, for testing purposes,
comparison of the two IDEs and testing how my
new modules behave in one IDE and another.
So for me is useful to have the folder NetBeans IDE
and the two subfolders NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 and
NetBeans IDE 3.6 Beta

Dear Wendi,

I think that you have two versions of Netbeans installed because the
3.5.1 version is a stable one and the 3.6 is in beta cycle at this
point. This you do for testing purposes on the IDE itself and the
modules. But that is excatly what I pointed out above as an
(presumably) uncommon situation that regular users of Netbeans won't
have on their machines: In a regular production you have only one
version installed and this is most likely the latest stable one.

But still, as I mention above too, if you drop the folder
level "Netbeans IDE" and push the folder "Netbeans IDE x.y.z" one
level up then you still have the comfortable selection possibility,
right?

Fixed (see the Issue 108948).
Now we`ll have the following structure:
NetBeans > NetBeans IDE 6.0 Build 2007101900
NetBeans > NetBeans IDE 6.0 Build 2007111900
NetBeans > NetBeans IDE 6.0
NetBeans > NetBeans IDE 7.0 M1 (probably:)
NetBeans > NetBeans IDE 7.0 Beta (probably:)
