This started to happen with Netbeans 8.1. Netbeans 8.0.2 worked without any problems with such a limited number of open file descriptors available. Maybe a resource leak in 8.1. Created attachment 161763 [details] Logfile when the IDE is running out of file descriptors and starts to hang. When the OS limits the number of open file descriptors to a value lower than what is needed to operate netbeans (e.g. 128), the IDE hangs and becomes unsuable. It's not even possible to exit the IDE when this happens.
