I was recently struggling to setup a new extension (.xpl for XProc Pipelines) in Netbeans and couldn't get the syntax highlighting, etc. working.  When I switched from application/xml to text/xml, everything worked.   It seems to me that application/xml should be treated the same as text/xml in terms of syntax highlighting, etc. within the editor.
